Feed the Need in Durham believes that food insecurity should not prevent anyone from fulfilling their potential or participating fully in the life of our community. It is our mandate to work with our member agencies and community partners to alleviate hunger by providing fresh, frozen, and non-perishable food to those who need it most in our community.
Who We Are
Feed the Need in Durham is the Regional Distribution Hub for emergency food providers in our community. We collect/rescue surplus and donated perishable and non-perishable food & other product to support our frontline providers including food banks, shelters, meal programs, in-school nutritional programs & other social service agencies. Together with our community at large, we are nourishing our neighbours facing food insecurity.
Where does our food come from?
Food donations come from a variety of sources such as distribution centres, store recovery programs, retail stores, food drives, manufacturers, individuals and families. Our bulk food purchasing program allows us to ensure that we always have the essentials available for our network of frontline providers. We also accept personal hygiene items, cleaning products & new houseware items.
We address food insecurity using a collective impact approach, leveraging our network and common infrastructure to collect and distribute food to those who face food insecurity in Durham Region. This allows Feed the Need in Durham to distribute 1.44 million pounds of food each year, equivalent to 1.2 million meals.
Long-term desired outcome
To alleviate hunger in our community through compassionate and collective action insuring that those who face food insecurity have dignified access to healthy and nutritious food in Durham Region.
