About Us

Our Mission

Feed the Need in Durham believes that food insecurity should not prevent anyone from fulfilling their potential or participating fully in the life of our community. It is our mandate to work with our member agencies and community partners to alleviate hunger by providing fresh, frozen, and non-perishable food to those who need it most in our community.

Who We Are

Operating as a registered charity since 2009, Feed the Need in Durham is Durham’s Regional Emergency Food Distribution Centre. Covering the largest geographical jurisdiction in the GTA, our boundaries stretch over 2,500 sq km of territory. Working collectively with over 65 hunger relief programs, hundreds of volunteers and thousands of community supporters, we procure and distribute over 2.5 million safe & nutritious meals annually.

In 2022, based on our core principals of access, equity and abundance, we expanded our streams of service and opened our first on-site, grocery store style and barrier free, frontline food program – The Market.

As an organization Feed the Need understands that food security is one of the most fundamental ways in which to break the cycle of poverty. Working with our federal, provincial & community leaders we leverage our expertise and research to help shape, advance and strengthen policies that will reduce hunger and support those who are facing food insecurity.

Where Does our Food Come From?

Food donations come from a variety of sources such as distribution centers, store recovery programs, retail stores, food drives, manufacturers, individuals and families. Our bulk food purchasing program allows us to ensure that we always have the essentials available for our network of frontline providers. We also accept personal hygiene items, cleaning products & new houseware items.
